SURFACING STRAND

COAL TAR TO BE UTILISED BITUMEX UXOBTAIX ABLE The question of re-surfacing the Strand was introduced by the Borough Foreman (Mr W. Henderson) at last Monday's meeting of the Whakatane Borough Council, when he stated that owing to bitumen being now unprocurable it would be necessary to complete the work with tar. The order had been placed six or seven months ago but owing to existing supplies being earmarked for national, purposes, there was no chance of an allocation coming to hand to meet the needs of Whakatane. The Main Highways Board realised the position and would be prepared to authorise the alternative process. He contemplated getting on with the work within the next three weeks.
