LARGE SCRUB FIRE
IMPRESSIVE SKY-GLOW MAORI CEMETERY SWEPT The fires which during the past two weeks have broken out intermittently on the strip of scrub and lupin country between Thornton and the north side of the Whiakatane harbour, flared up again last evening after smouldering for a day or two. The flames at one stage reached impressive dimensions lighting up the whole of the countryside. The houses on Hillcrest appeared clearly outlined, and many residents from the suburbs anticipating that the fire was closer to the town than it actually was hastened to the scene. Fortunately no actual damage has been reported' to private property but the flames passed over the historic Maori cemetery in the sandhills, destroying many of the enclosures. This morning though the fire is> still burning it appears to isolated and considerably smaller in extent.
