Private Lan:e Armstrong, of the Medical Corps, is on leave and visiting his parents, Mr and Mrs K. Armstrong, Victoria Avenue. He is to leave for a southern camp shortly

In view of his .approaching departure to join tiie New Zealand Scottish Regiment, Mr Laurie Johnson Avas met by fellow members of the Loan and Mercantile Agency's Whakatane staff on Saturday evening and tendered a farewell evening.

In view of his departure for camp to-morrow, Mr Tom Henderson was met by fellow staff members at Messrs D. McL. Wallace Ltd. ors

Friday evening and made the recipient of a presentation. Mr N l . A. Corcoran, manager of the firm in handing Mr Henderson a handsome tobacco pouch paid tribute to his sterling qualities and wished him every success in the future. Home Guardsmen and members of the Gtakiri Patriotic Committee gathered at the hall last week to bid farewell to two residents of the district and members of the Guard who leave for camp this week. The function took the form of a smoke concert with the chairman of the Patriotic Committee, Mr R. Dunning, in the chair. The guests were Messrs Coad and Bolland and in addition to the valedictor3 r remarks made by the chairman, Mr Kedgely spoke on behalf of the Home Guard.

On Friday in the Parish Hall members of the Teachers' Institute gathered to bid farewell to Mr and Mrs Southey. The hall had been arranged as a lounge and on entering Mrs Southey was presented with a bouquet by Miss Whiteside and also with, one by Miss Plaice, of Edgecumbe. During the evening high tributes and best wishes were expressed by Mr Ker president of the Institute, Mr Hauesler (Native Schools), and Mr Boswcll (Ruatoki). The evening's programme was pleasantly arranged and items were contributed by Misses Semmcns and Whiteside (sketch), Mr Pyne (saxophone), Mr Boswcll (vocal solos), and Mr Haues!er (lighting sketches).
