FIRST AID AWARDS
MANY PASS EXAMINATION GOOD WORK DONE LOCALLY Thirty-two certificates were presented to first aid trainees at the Caledonian Hall on Tuesday night tyhen a large number of women members were present. Mr A. J. Canning, president of the local branch of the St. John Ambulance Association, made the presentation; and Mr A. Carl'ing, instructor, also addressed the meeting. ' Mr Canning in expressing his pleasure that so many ladies had coma forward to give their services stated that this was particularly gratifying* in that at the outset most members had been men but the* numbers had been greatly depleted as these left to serve the colours. The work was most important at any time and more so at present when at any time the first-aider's might be called upon to apply their knowledge. With the training they had they would know what to dc* at tlic right time. ... Mr Carling added his congratulations stating that it was a great credit to the ladies that they had obtained a hundred per cent pass. He took the opportunity to announce that the Nursing Division, had commenced operations with an. Initial enrolment of 25 members. The work was interesting and useful and more members would. be. welcomed. He appealed to the first aiders to put in as much practice as possible as their services might be needed in the near future. He said the Borough was doing its share and also throughout the whole County splendid service was being given and rapid progress made. Unfortunately not many men had joined probably thinking they would not be needed. However, duty held that a person should be prepared and the "We'll be there when needed" attitude w r as not a worthy one as unless trained a person would be useless. The classes held throughout the county had enrolled and trained recruits from O'hope, Waimana, Nukuhou, Taneatua,- Ruatoki, Edgecumbe, Otakiri, Thornton, Awakeri, Mat" ata, Manawahe, Te Teko, Onepu and even as far afield as Fenton's Mill. Galatea being so far distant had not had lectures but nurses in that district were giving instruction. "First aid is as well cared for as any branch of the E.P.5.," he concluded, "and I hope you will keep on training and induce others to give their services."
