EARTHQUAKE SHOCKS

LIGHT SHAKES ON SATURDAY NIGHT RESIDENTS LOSE SLEEP Commencing with' a definite shake at about 11 p'.m 1 . on Saturday earthquake shocks and tremors continued throughout the hours of darkneste with the result that nervousness laimongst residents was responsible for a great deal of sleep being lost. The first shock was preceded with a noise resembling a faint detonation and likewise were about nine others which were the most severe. The tremors, Avliich came at frequent intervals numbered over a score, one resident stating that he counted twenty-five between 1 a.m. and daybreak. The nature of the shocks gave the indication that the action was local,, * None were of sufficient intensity to cause damage but merely alarm in many cases. MORE ACTIVITY LAST NIGHT HEAVIER SHOCKS FELT LOUD RUMBLINGS HEARD Commencing at about the same time 1 more shocks were felt last night rather a .severe one occurring at about li .30 a muffled report being followed by a jerky motion. From then on throughout the nighf shocks were felt at frequent intervals. Each was preceded by the rumbling which is stated to have been more pronounced nearer the sea. Residents in the Heaus area bear out the theory that the disturbance was off the coast, and this is also supported by the report of an Edgecumbe resident who states that he felt no shocks on Saturday evening, but felt three.' slight shakes last evening. At the time of going to press no damage of a serious nature had been reported although it is stated that a leak was sprung in a water main in Douglas Street and a concrete path was cracked in another locality while a chimney top was dislodged at a residence in Stewart Street.
