DAIRYING SEASON

I EFFECT OF DRY WEATHER f I ! i MILK SUPPLY FALLS OFF 1 . j Hopes entertained by Whakatane district farmers of a really good season for growth to enable them to expand their dairy produce output appear doomed to. disappointment. January and February have been exceptionally dry months. This lack of rain has hastened the seasonal decline in the milk yield of dairy herds which is always to be expected after New Year. Collection Once Daily Supplies of the Pupuaruhe l cheese factory of the Rangitaiki Plains Dairy Company were advised during the week that their milk would be collected once daily commencing Saturday 21. For the previous three months milk has been collected twice daily to keep two full shifts of men working at the factory. It is understood that the change to once daily collection will reduce the cost of milk collection considerably. Some suppliers will have their milk collected at 7 a.m. and others at 6 p.m., this being arranged to enable milk collecting trucks' to pick ut> a full, load of cans in quick time. Respite for Milkers Many suppliers will doubtless be glad of a respite from the rush and bustle of getting their milking done twice daily before the factory truck gets to their gates. Some will be able to start their morning milking at dawn instead of in total darkness. Others will be able to milk later in the evening than during the flush months, when herds have been yarded at 2.30 p.m. or 3 p.m.
