Local and General

Busy Taxpaying Week The final week of February will see a lot of local taxpayers lining up to contribute to *the coffers of the State. Doubtless many people who may not have paid their Social Security tax by Saturday (28th) will lament that this is not leap year, or that the month has not 30 or 31 days. Vagaries of Weather While people on most parts of the Plains were complaining on Friday that the rainfall o,f Wednesday and Thursday had been so short lived rind gardeners of Whakatane were bemoaning the fact that the clerk of the weather was merely teasing them, people at Thornton (believe It or not) were unable to move from shelter because of a heavy downpour of rain. It is reported that over a strip of country approximately three in width the rain fell generously while the rest of the Bay sweltered under bright sunshine.

Maize Crops in the Bay Maize paddocks throughout the Bay of Plenty are now a plieaslng sight, as the tall cornstalks are now at full height and displaying their flower heads and tasselled cobs. Girl Guide Activities The Whakatane girl guide troop has been lately exemplifying its 'good deed' obligations by Assisting in the making of camouflage netting and in collecting and cleaning ergot. The guides have been animated by an enthusiastic and industrious spirit which is characteristic of all their undertakings to date. Grassi Fire At 12.30 p.m. on Sunday the Fire Brigade was called to the seclion at the rear of the Borough Council Chambers where grass had caught fire and was threatening valuable stock of hardwood timber owned by the council. None of the material was lost although some was badly scorched. The brigade soon had the flames under control.
