FURTHER SCRUB FIRE
WIDE AREA AT OHIWA
DANGER TO OHOPE RESIDENCES
A fire which was probably started) by picnickers at Ohiwa last Sunday developed' dangerous proportions on Monday and' Tuesday, and at one time actually endangered shacks and' houses at the eastern end of the beach. Fortunately the l wind changed slightly yesterday with the result that the flames failed to cross Bluett's creek.
Fed by the dry lupins and the undergrowth the outbreak which at Grst was not considered o.f any consequence spread with amazing rapidity, sweeping up the foreshore and Illuminating the countryside. The reflection could be seen for many miles, while many of the residents it the beach became apprehensive about their own property and stayed up all night. By daybreak however the wind'had veered and the flames dropped.
