DANGER OF GRASS FIRES
THE possibilities of the dry spell continuing are now more prominent than ever, and as a, result the danger from grass and scrub fires must be emphasised. During the past fortnight there have been numerous instances of carelessness giving rise to outbreaks within the borough which, but for the timely action of the Brigade, might easily have had very serious consequences. Householders should remember that even the most inconspicuous fire will, if left unattended; be liable to spread rapidly in. an undergrowth which now is as dry as tinder. On the Plains yesterday a scrub fire,, luckily within -a waste area, gained such wide proportions that it caused considerable concern until controlled. This should serve as an example of the spreading propensities of fires under present conditions.
