LOOKING TO OUR DEFENCES
FACED with realities, the Dominion in the words of the Hon. R. Semple, Minister of National Service, is now regarding the question of defence as its first consideration. The statement indicates the early release of a further ballot, which we have been informed is likely to include all available able-bodied men for quick intensive training. Just how far the Government intends to go remains a secret at present but it is obvious that the time is rapidjy approaching when faced with real emergency the country will be needing the utmost its manpower can provide. These facts must now be faced owing to the slowness of development in the Anglo-American plan of campaign. New Zealand must be prepared to stand on -its own feet until such time a,s the Democratic fleets once again dominate the Pacific and the forces of iiivasion are swept therefrom for ever.
