WATER AT WHARF
MORE DEPTH REQUIRED DREDGING TO BE DONE Since the building of the j> resent wharves at the Whalcatane port it j has never been necessary to deepen j the harbour near the wharves, but recently it was found that river action had made such work necessary and the Board's consulting engineer, Captain C. H. Brebner, was asked to report on the suggestions. It has been found that it would be beyond' the Board to obtain a dredge usually employed for such work, but a walking dredge, the property of the P.W.D. is to be obtained at the end of .March and will work from the wharf. This machine will be able to dredge within a few feet of the piles and then the small section left will be readily sluiced away. The engineer's estimate of the cost of the work was £350 and his suggestion was adopted.
