RUBBISH COLLECTION DISCUSSED

COMPLAINTS FROM HEALTH

DEPARTMENT

A problem which has given the local authorities in this centre no little trouble is again coming to the forefront in the agenda of meetings, and' at Friday's meeting of the Harbour Board a letter was read from the Health Department stating that the practice of depositing and burning rubbish on the waterfront continued' and refuse was to be found outside practically all the premises with back doors bordering the riA'er. Also some cases were under notice on the Heads side of the launch wharf. The Inspector expressed the opinion that a rubbish collection was very desirable. Mr R. Ruddick askecl was it no.t the duty of tlic Borough Council to collect rubbish and received the reply from the secretary that at present there was no collection made. The system which had been in force was that each person requiring a collection paid so much per tin removed. Very few had availed themselves of the service and the Borough Council had cancelled the arrangement. He added his opinion that the only solution was a free service as people would not finance the "work. If this was instituted and not made use of then odenders avlio deposited rubbish on the banks or in the harbour could lie prosecuted. The chairman, Mr W. R. Boon, pointed out that without benzine the people found it hard to dispose of rubbish and lie agreed that the only satisfactory solution was the institution. Mr G. A. Brabant stated that the objectionable practice had increased lately and all kinds of refuse was dumped into, the harbour. After some discussion it was decided that by means of a notice board residents be warned that they were liable to prosecution if they deposited rubbish on the banks oj in the harbour.
