TRAGIC DEATH
DRAGGED BY HORSE BOY KILLED AT OTAKIRI » A boy of 14 years, William McManusl, was killed at Otakiri on Saturday morning - when he was dragged! by a horse he was en-# deavouring to catch. The tragedy occurred' at about six a.m. The lad, who some months has been staying with his uncle, Mr J. Hunia, on the farm on Otakiri road, left the* house to catch the horse. A long rope was attached to the animal to be used for the purpose of catching it. It appears thatMvhen approached the horse took fright, turned quickly and the rope became entwined in the boy's legs. The set off at a canter and dragged the victim around a paddock twice, in the course of its career crossing a bridge. Mr Hunia noticed the horse galloping and. saw the boy being dragged, but, however, was unable to stop the animal until the lad had received such severe injur ies that he was dead. Dr. F. J. * Appleby and Sergeant Mi. Farrell were quickly on the scene, but the victim was beyond aid. The deceased was a son of Mrs McManus, of Te Teko, and the late Mr James Patrick McManus, who for some time was proprietor of the Te Teko Store.
