' Efforts are likely to be made in the near future' to exploit the tin deposit at Port Pegasus near the southern extremity of Stewart Islands A party left Half Moon Bay at the beginning of last week to take the materials for the construction of a water-race to the claim and when the race is completed a start will probably be made with alluvial mining. The extraordinary demand for tin for war purposes lias been accentuated by the loss of the mines: in Malaya since the Japanese entry into the war. Previous attempts to exploit the mineral i-e----sources at Port Pegasus were notsuccessful, but it is believed that under the present conditions profitable exploitation might be possible.
