Having a surplus of funds in the Main Reads Accounts the "VVhakatane County Council has decided to expend £1232 10s on the work of metalling roads in need of maintenance and which were not provided for in the estimates.
The acting-engineer presented the following report which was adopted and the work authorised. The programme will cease at the end of the financial year.
The following is an estimate of the cost of metalling roads which are in need of maintenance and for which there is no provision in the estimates. The amount allocated against each road is estimated to provide an average coating of three cubic yards per chain.
Some 4600 cubic yards of metal are involved in the above schedule. The normal metalling programme which has yet to be completed is also a heavy one and there are many factors which may prevent the carrying out of the above additional metalling before the 31st March. The depleted state of the Wliakatane River pits concerned renders it problematical whether such a large quantity of gravel is readily available. A high daily output must be maintained to put out the quantity within the limited time. A ten hour day is already being worked by the contractors, but one shovel is at present laid up for repairs. Petrol is another doubtful factor. The weather fortunately has been exceptionally favourable to date.
