THEFT FROM LOCAL FIRM

ARRESTED IN TIMARU

That the arm of the law is ai long one was illustrated once again when, arrested in Timaru, Leonard Vincent Foglarty, a traveller, appeared at the local court yescterday on four charges of theft from R. Oxenham, Radio Dealer, of Whakatane. The charges had been reduced' by the police from that of fail* ure to account, and involved sums of £5, £2 10s and £1 10s.

The police represented by Sergeant M. Farrcll, stated that when in Whakatane the accused had collected the monies from Maoris on payments for radio sets and liad absconded. Mr Oxenliam did not apply for restitution of the money.

Mr L. Buddie, acting lor the accused, stated that Fogarty suffered from consumption and asked the Bench to treat him leniently, as; a prison term would be the worst thing possible for the man's health. He entered a plea of guilty.

The Justices, Messrs C. G. Lucas and J. G. Mulholland, however, stated that in view of the accused past record he should be punished and a sentence of six weeks gaol at Mt. Eden was imposed.
