BIG PAYOUT

DECEMBER BUTTERFAT MONEY FOR FARMERS OF THE BAY Thanks to the good work of the Navy in keeping" the seas clear for convoyed cargo ships, the farmers of the Bay of Plenty will have many tens of thousands of pounds paid into their bank accounts by the dairy companies on the 20th of this month. December was a good month for dairy farmers. Milk production was then at its peak, so* that for most farmers the cheque for December butterfat which comes to them this week will be the best of the season. A good deal of money will be put into circulation as the cheques for butterfat reach the current accounts of farmers at Whakatane and Taneatua banks. Farmers complain that they never handle money—it just flies past them. However that may be, there w r ill be a lot of cheques out tliis -week, and many debts will be cancelled out, and new purchases made. No one knows when the 20th of the month comes round better than local bank staffs. A deluge of cheques paid in during the next week o«r so by tradespeople tells its own stor.y. And then again, as farmers, sharemilk ers, their employees and families come to town for the first time after the 20th, there is quite- a queue in front of the paying x»ut teller, and the question: "How will you have it?" is one frequently asked and precedes a rustle oif bank notes and a rattle of silver on the bank counter. So here's to the 20th of January, with its big payout of butterfat money earned by people toiling ear-1 ly and late on the Bay of Plenty farms. May there be many more like it! (So the Whakatane business people hope). !
