WELCOME RAIN

STILL MORE OF IT NEEDED BROKEN WEATHER OF LITTLE VALUE The rain which fell last Tuesday night measured nearly an inch and was the best and most consistent shower experienced by the district for over a month. Local gardens and lawns were given a good soaking, and reports from the district indicate that the fall was widespread and in spite of the haymaking saeson, welcomed in the rural areas as much as in the town. Unfcirtunately the Bay appears to have experienced but the fringe of the storm which ileluged the centre of the North Island and the Taranaki province. The rain though most welcome, Avas scarcely sufficient to meet and relieve the dry conditions which had prevailed for so long. The following wind which dried the surface so effectually next day has brought occasional showers, which however are of little or no value. According to one farmer, the Plains at this moment could do with a thorough downpour, and he is warmly backed in his contention by the town dweller.
