CASES AT TANEATUA
£2 FINE FOR ASSAULT On the 20th instant as: the result of a complaint by his wife one Oliver Stacey Murdoch, of Ruatoki, appeared before Messrs Moody and Hayward, J.'sP., at Taneatua charged with assaulting his wife Hine Murdoch. He pleaded guilty to> the charge, the constable explaining that the trouble started over liquor of which more serious charges were expected to follow, the Justices severely cautioned the offender and fined him £2.
On the 24th instant one Pita Pouwhare a native of Ruatoki, appeared before the same Justices charged with using insulting language to Constable Rice. The Constable explained that the offender passed an insulting remark about the Constable to some other natives in the street, the remark being " said in Maori which was understood. He pleaded guilty to the charge and the Justices convicted and fined him the maximum of £5, stating that he remain in custody until, the fine was paid. This was forthcoming in a very short time.
