COUNTY CONTROL
MEASURES TO MEET EMERGENCY
EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE. APPOINTED
In view of petrol being unavailable for private cars and' to meet the emergency conditions prevailing the Whakatane County Council at Tuesday's) meeting appointed the chairman, Cr W. A. McCracken (chairman of the Finance Committee), and the executive staff to act as an executive committee d<uritng the emergency and to control the Council's affairs in the meantime. The chairman had explained that the benzine supply for county work had been reduced by 33 1-3 per cent, while no petrol would be available for members to travel to meetings in private cars. It would thus be impossible for members to meet other than for urgent E.P.S. work when consumption of fuel would be minimised by members travelling together.
In regard to work in the county it would be necessary to curtail all but essential construction jobs and to concentrate on maintenance of existing facilities. It was likely that some staff would have to be dealt with. Mr Burnett continued that if any material wanted for work was required for the country's safety then it should be foregone. The new workshop would be carried on at least as far as the roofing so that some use could be made of it. Ragwort eradication would also be continued . The councillors agreed that all people should make every effort to save benzine and assist the war effort in every way.
