YEAR OF PROGRESS
FIFTH ANNUAL MEETING
The fifth annual meeting of the Whakatane Caeldonian Society took place in the King Street Hall last Monday evening. The attendance was fair in spite of the stringent regulations covering petrol rationing, and there, was a definite note of enthusiasm throughout. In his annual report Chief W. J. Simons mentioned the fact that the year had been probably the most intensive in the Society's history. Apart from the equipping of the band the King Street Hall had been purchased for £1000, and was now in the proccss of enlarging and improving.
The balance sheet which was presented by the treasurer, Mrs F. E. Berry, showed a credit balancc of £151, and a surplus of assets over liabilities amounting to £525. The principal details were as under: Receipts Ingleside Revenue £111,. Subs £23, Donations £92, Donations to Band £20, Rents £20. Payments, Band Equipment £62, Advertising £16, Hall. Rents £12, Legal Expenses £Gl, Building Society £31, Timber £70.
Both the report and balance sheet were read and adopted. Officers Elected The election of officers resulted: Patron: Mr J. A. Grant. Chief: Mr W. J. Simons. Chieftains: Messrs H. D. Paterson, W. Howat. Secretary: Mr C. K'ngsley-Smith. Assistant Secretary: Miss Barbara Howat. Trc&surcr: Mrs M. Craig. Executive: Mesdamcs Craig, J. Martin, J. King and Mr J. King. Social Committee: Messrs S. West, W. Howat, A. Ferguson, S. McKenzie, Mesdames Simon"". Butler, McKenzie and Miss M. Kcwat. Doorkeeper: Mr Neu McLcnnan. Pipe-major; Mr Laurie Johnson. Drum-major: Mr S. McKenzie.
Membership Status A notice of motion from Mr A. Ferguson regarding the status governing persons eligible from membership was discussed for some time It eventually being decided to change the clause in the constitution to read: That members shall consist of persons of Scottish extract and associate members who "Shall be approved of by the executive but wlio shall not be able to exercise a vote In the; affairs of the Society, and that all shall pay a common subscription fee of Gentlemen 10/- and ladfes 5/-. It was decided to"" empower the Social Executive to run public dances apart from the ordinarv Ingleside nights, which will be run as in the past by the Executive.
The band secretary, Pipe Cpl W. floAvat, read a report on the activities of the band which he said had achieved a high standard of efficiency with twelve pipers, and five drummers. There' were also a number D f learners coming on.
Votes of thanks were passed to Miss Kath Walton, Mr N. McLennan, Pipe Miajor Johnson, Mrs Berry, the secretary, and the members of the ladies committee. Before the meeting closed it was decided to send. cables extending the season's greetings to members of the Socicty now overseas with the armed forces.
