PARTIOTIC FUNDS

AUCKLAND PROVINCE SHARE,

RAISING OF £222,582

Provincial Councils now shoulder lie entire burden of fund-raising

or every patriotic purpose, includ-

ing Sick and Wounded and Prisoners of War, according to a decision

f far-reaching consequence made

at the Conference held in Wellington on 20th November, 1941, of representatives of the National Fund Board, the National Council, and the 11 Provincial Councils.

The main business of Conference was adoption of the Fund Board's Budget of £752,700, for the year which ends on 30th September, 1942; and it was in this connection that the new financial responsibility of Provincial Councils was defined. The estimated expenditure approved • £752,700—is designed to meet the net requirements for the period of all patriotic purposes, including Sick and Wounded and Prisoners of War under the folloAving sub-divisions-General purposes £167,200; Sick and Wounded £115,500; Prisoners of War £170,000. With regard to the Sick and Wounded Account of the Fund Board, the balance of which at Ist October, 1941, was £451,650, Conference agreed that "the Fund Board decide an amount necessary to establish in the Sick and Wounded Account an adequate reserve for after-war work; that this amount be deducted from the sum in hand as at 30th September, 1941; that Provincial Councils provide the difference between the balance in hand, if any, and Budget figures; and that Provincial Councils raise those moneys in such manner as tliey deem expedient." The reserve, has since been assessed at £400,000. This means that Provincial Councils, for 1941/ 42, will be called upon to provide, over and above the £467,200 for general purposes, the sum of £233,850, which represents the amount of the estimated expenditure for Sick and Wounded and Prisoners of War (£285,500), less the £51,650 credit balance in the Account, now to be maintained at £400,000 in reserve. Therefore, the total funds to be found by Provincial Councils during 1941/42 will be: — £ General Purposes .. .. 467,200 Sick & Wounded and Prisoners of War . . . . 233,850 £701,050

The Auckind Provincial Council's proportionate share is approximately £222.582. The amount is payable in quarterly instalments,. the first of which, for the period OctoberDecember, 1941, is now due. It will l-eadily be appreciated that now the Provincial Council has to carry the full load of patriotic financing, the utmost degree of co-operation in the successful prosecution of the 1942 All Patriotic Purposes Appeal for £500,000 must be forthcoming from the expending agents of the Sick and Wounded Fund—the Joint Council of St. John and N.Z. Red Cross Society—as well tis; from the main expending agents for General Purposes —the Y.M.G.A., the Salvation Army Church of England Military Affairs Committee and the Catholic War Services Board. The matter of future appeals, it was decided, was to be solely for Provincial Councils and not organised on a Dominion basis.
