PRELIMINARY CANTERS CANDIDATES FOR, BAY OF PLENTY (Hie) CUP Both of the popular fancied candidates for the Bay of Plenty (Hie) •Cup race on December 13 have now done their preliminary canters along the "VVhakatane track. Sawdust Bill with Sullivan up pleased his connections when he galloped "Grandly" on Tuesday evening. Many onlookers consider he is a much-improved horse and will pomp home an easy winner. Doughboy Charlie was seen out A few days previously on the local traelc. As a new arrival from the wild East he attracted a lot of attention from track watchers on the lookout for a good thing. Trainer Nordmeyer is confident that Doughboy Charlie cannot be beaten. He certainly is well-bread. "When I say he is this year's HicCup Avinner I mean every word of it," said his trainer. "I don't say that just to throw dust (or flour) in the eyes of the public." One reason why Sawdust Bill looks in such good condition is that he has been thriving on a special diet of staytouses, which he prefers to oats. He is a temperamental horse, and likely to play up at the barrier if he hears a brass band playing or rattling the donation box. Vet Barclay, the agricultural wizard, is due here to rub Doughboy Charlie down with his patent Guaranteed Price butterfat embrocation, a sure cure for slumps, booms, dumps and mumps.
