ANOTHER APPEAL
WASTE RAG COLLECTION
NEEDED FOR AIR FORCE
A fev\£ months ago. the R.N.Z.A.F. made an urgent appeal for cleaning rags and the task of collecting these throughout the Dominion was given, by the National Council for Recla-* mation of Waste, to the Girl Guides Association. Appeals over the air were made in the different centres and several thousands of Guides visited almost every household, in the Dominion. The rags were deposited at central depots where other members of the Guide organisation sorted them into the correct sizes and materials, and they were then delivered to the various aerodromes. The following returns submitted by the air department cover the nett weight of rags as sorted:— Received at— Hobsonville (Auckland) 11,5811bs New Plymouth 6141bs Ohakea 500'lbs Levin 1501bs Rongotai (Wellington) 18,2061bs Blenheim 3881bs Wigram (Cliristchurch) 14,8041bs Taieri (Dunedin) 5,2691bs 51,7821bs Grand total 51,7821bs or 23 tons, 2cwt lqr 121bs. On these returns it is estimated that the New Zealand. Patriotic Funds will benefit by £1200 for the value of these rags. Now another appeal has come to the Girl Guides Association from the National Council for Reclamation of Waste. This time the Royal Navy require 4 tons of cleaning rags urgently for use when refitting H.M. ships. Tliis appeal is to be spread over the Dominion and within the next few weeks the Girl Guides will again be' asking for the co-operation and help of householders throughout New Zealand.
