FIRST OPOTIKI CASE

FINE IMPOSED

The first case of its kind to be heard in Opotiki came before the O'potiki Police Court last week when Robert Carruthers was charged that on October 1, being the occupier of premises situated in Windsor Street, he failed to comply with an order directing restrictions of lighting imposed by the Lighting Restriction Regulations, in that he failed to effectively screen lights as directed. Defendant pleaded guilty. Sergeant Isbister stated that nearly all the people had complied with the regulations but there were ' a few who did not. The wardens went round but their efforts in some directions were not very successful and the police decided to take a hand. Defendant was warned on September 4 when the l blinds; w r ere up and the lights streaming through the windows. On October 1 the same conditions existed. Defendant said that on the second occasion his son was home and went into the sitting room for a couple of minutes and the blinds were up. He had since had the bulb removed from that room. A fine of 10s with 10s costs was imposed.
