Street Appeal At Monday's meeting of the Bor. ough Council the local branch ol the Plunket Society was granted permission a street collection on Novemb^^fc^ Pipe Relining The relining of 13 chains of Avatei main in Commerce Street was com* pie ted on Monday by the contractors, this work entailing an expenditure of about £125. Gorse Growth As a result of mention by Cr C. S. Armstrong the Borough Council intends to have gorse growing on the steep hillsides bordering Commerce Street cleared. Cr Armstrong stressed the danger of allowing gorse to spread, quoting the country near Wellington as an instance. Borougli Finance Accounts totalling £2036 10s lOd were passed for payment at Monday's meeting of the Whakatane Borough Council. The town clerk reported that the General Account was in credit to. the extent of £153 19s 9d and the Electricity Account £993 14s lid. Street Sealing Streets in Sutherland Block, Ramson Block and Salonika Street are now compacted and the primer seal coat will be sprayed within the nexl few days. Authority was given the foreman-engineer on Monday nighl by the Borough Council to close those streets for twenty-four hours during sealing operations. Hosing Restrictions Considerable increase in Avatei consumption recently has been noted by the Borough Electrical Engineer (Mr F. W. Lysaght) indicating that gardeners are becoming busy. As a result of his report the Borough Council has decided to impose the usual restrictions on use cf water, which rule that hosing can be done by hand only between the hours o>f 5.30 p.m. and 7.30 p.m. Maybe Hels Right ! "Minutes of the meeting of the Works Committee —Rubbish!" was the startling remark issued by the town clerk, Mr D. V. Saunders, on Monday night and which was greeted with roars of laughter and, in fact, some agreement —the latter being confined to members of the Finance Committee. Mr Saunders remark came out *pat" and he joined the amusement. He had read the, introduction to. the minutes, and the first sub-heading was "Rubbish," relating to the discussion regarding rubbish collection. Strange Ocean Visitors Occasionally strange ocean visitors are cast upon the banks of the East Coast rivers. Not long ago at Waikokopu an oar-fish 32 feet long made its appearance l , part of it being sent to experts for classification. The latest 'curiosity was a visitor to Wairoa —a sunfish which became stranded on the loAver banks of the Wairoa River, having been cast up in a dying state by heavy seas. The fish Avas seven feet long by four feet wide, and Avas almost oval. It had huge dorsal and pectoral fins, Avith small side fins. It Aveight Avas about 4001b.
