MATATA WATER
IMPROVEMENTS TO SCHEME
LONG FELT WANT
For miany months the water supply at the township of Mat. ata hias been far from satisfactory, and County Council Riding member, Cr F. J. Burt, has been anxious to have improvements effected. At last month's meeting of the Council members were able to show practically their sympathy with the shortcomings of the Matata reticulations to transfer loan monies to tions to transfer of loan monies tc be expended on the necessary work. The proposals; were furthered at last month's meeting when the clerl< (Mr C. G. Lucas) reported that no objections had been raised to thf intended action of the Council ant] the project could be furthered. The acting-engineer (Mr R. (>. Tomkins) reported that some piping had come to hand and he also tabled n report on, and an estimate of the costs, of the work to be undertaken. He reported as follows: I submit an estimate of the cost of complet, ing the pipe line from the concrete dam to the Post Office. The work covered by the estimate comprises the lajung of a new Sin galvanised WVI. pipe for a distance of 13 chains to connect up between the concrete dam and the existing 3i.n steel pipe at the temporary dam. From the temporary dam to< a point just below the railway crossing is 23 chains. This main consists of 3m steel tube. Of this length 12 chains require lifting from their present precarious position in the stream bed and re-laying in a safer position. These pipes also need recoating with tar or bituminous material to prevent further corrosion. From this latter point near the railway crossing to Savage's Store at thf foot of the hill is 36 chains and consists of 3in wooden pipe. It is possible that with the increased pressure resulting from the additional head gained by connecting up with the concrete dam this section of pipe will give further trouble and an estimate has been made for renewing same in 3in galvanised W.I pipe. From Savage's Store to the Hotel is a distance of 20 chains and it is proposed to renew this existing 3ir wooden pipe with 2in galvanised W.l+ with a 2in scour pipe across the bitumen road opposite the Hotel From the Hotel to the Post Office it is proposed to replace the presenl 3in wooden pipe by a %in galvaniseel W.I. pipe, with a 3 /4 in scour at the low point in the road about halfway along. The cost of the piping only will be defrayed by the Post and Telegraph Department. The cost of the different sections will be:—(a) From concrete dam tc temporary dam, £230 18s; (b) From temporary dam to railway crossing E62 10s; (c) From railway crossing to Savage's Store, £597 17s; (d) Savage's Store to Hotel, £255 18s; (e) Hotel to Post Office, £36 9ls 9d. Estimated total cost (including contingencies £66 7s 3el) £1250. This figvure applies to pipe line from dam to the Post Office ane} does not ap. ply to branch mains, two at least of which I understand are in wood.
