THE PRIMARY SCHOOL

INCREASED ACCOMMODATION

PLANNED

ANSWER TO CRITICISM

Our remarks in Wednesday's leader on the many short-comings of the Primary School have created a little uneasiness in the ranks of the school committee, members of which deputed their secretary to make certain explanations in view of possible misconceptions which might arise locally. The inference that half a dozen temporary classrooms were required to house pupils was incorrect and we bow to the fact that there is now but one temporary building in use—the Bandroom. Also, we learn that the shortage of seating accommodation so acute a short time ago has now been overcome. Our remarks, written with a desire to assist the committee in its persistent efforts to improve the conditions of the Primary School were, Ave understand slightly belated. On the other hand we feel that there is still every reason to pu,sh the claims of Whakatane's long neglected school needs and we are of the opinion that our gentle tip to the Department will not go amiss. The committee has now been informed that a grant has been approved by Cabinet for the erection of an additional classroom at the Primary School "which will overcome the necessity for further use of the Band Room. There are also plans for modernising and extending the older building. There is now no longer any necessity to use the passages as classrooms since all the standards have been removed to the High School buildings.* The committee also desires it known that it was fully cognisant with the difficulties and problems of the old school, but is now glad to be able to report that most of these have been overcome and that improvements are now well on the way towards fulfillment. A suggestion that the 'press' should attend meetings in future in order to acquaint parents with', the activities of the committee and give publicity to its projected undertakings was welcomed and there appears; to be every prospect of a cooperative working basis in future.
