FIVE MILLIONS

NATIONAL SAVINGS

CAMPAIGN

LOCAL QUOTA £234 WEEKLY

To further stimulate the National Savings Campaign the object of tvhich is £5,000,000 annually, a new '"barometer" scheme has been introduced for the purpose of keeping passers-bj' conversant with the position in each locality and reminding them that a concerted effort is needed to keep a steady-flow of savings Accumulating.

Thus next week local residents will see adorning of the flag poles on the local Post Office a large ball which as savings accrue will move upwards indicating the advance towards the local weekly quota of £234. If and when the ball tops the pole then a pennant will be run up on the other staff to denote that Whakatane has achieved its obiect.

Each Monday morning the ball will again start at the bottom, except that when the weekly quota is exceeded the excess will be carried forward and the indicator given a flying start on its journey upwards.

National Savings in Wliakatane commenced very well and although they have declined to> some extent are fairly satisfactory. However, increased and more steady effort is needed to ensure that this centre is 'fully playing its part in the Dominion's war effort.
