THE LURKING SNEAK

ANONYMOUS LETTER WRITER

OHOPE VICTIMS

The quiet beauty of Oh ope is apparently wasted on certain individuals who have formed the habit, despite their charming surroundings, of writing anonymous letters and victimising certain members of the community. Why official quarters take any notice of these miserable missives is beyond ordinary comprehension, but they do, and so thereby hangs a tale, best known possibly, to the authorities themselves.

The subject was raised at the meeting of the Ghope Progress and Ratepayers' League, when several speakers complained of this sort of treatment. One in particular mentioned a letter from the Oil Fuel Controller which he had received demanding to know the reason why he had presumably used his truck for carting furniture, gravel and pum-

ice. The information stated that word had reached the office anonymously. "In reply," said the speaker, "I simply wrote back demanding substantiation of the allegation the date and everything else. I haven't heard a word since." Other speakers spoke of people driven to desperation lay this method of underground persecution. The whole wretched business was a blight on the Ohopc community.

The chairman, Mr T. P. Dowling, said that they could only be written by persons with nothing better to do, and the matter was dropped.
