QUESTION OF SEALING
The question of sealing portion of the approach road to the beach in order to overcome the dust nuisance Avas discusscd at the meeting of the Ohope Progress and Ratepayers' League held in the Captain's Cabin last Monday evening.
Mr T. P. DoAvling Avho presided, said that the picnic grounds Averc robbed of much of their attractiAreness owing to the dust clouds Avliich were blown from the roadway. On his suggestion it Avas decided to Avrite the County Council requesting that the main road approach and that section traA'ersing the picnic* ground frontage be tar-sealed.
The portion of dedicated road in the vicinity of the Post Office Avas also discussed and in rebuttal of the reply, from the County Council that no funds Ave re available for sealing this small area, draining it and putting it into service, the chairman said that lie kneAV of one ratepayer alone Avho Avas paying in rates sufficient to meet principal and interest on a loan to accommodate the Avork.
The Council, life said, should not overlook the fact that many Ohope residents Averc still paying off a substantial section of the original roading scheme loan which Avas diverted toi make roads in other parts of the county Avliich they personally would neA-er use.
Deputation to Council
He went, on to say that he felt strongly on the matter and unless something was done would not be above 'direct action' whereby ratepayers avouUl refuse to meet then rates until they obtained the muchneeded improvements.
On Mr H. C. Kennedy's motion it was agreed to meet the Riding Member, Mir H. C. McCready and later to arrange a deputation to wait on the Council.
Domain Board's Programme
Members of the Oh ope Domain Board were welcomed by the chairman who invited an outline of the programme the Board had in mind, for improving the reserves. The chairman, Rev. J. G. Laughton, then detailed the scheme which embraced the fencing off and breaking in of the Southern Reserve, the formation of a children's playing area on the corner, Avitli SAvings, scesaAA's, etc., and a substantial fence, and 'the laying out of the smaller reserves on the aa t csl end.
The Progress and Ratepayers' League decided by way of co-opera-tion to make every endeavour to complete the seating accommodation on the picnic grounds and to run if possible a social for the raising of funds. In connection with the latter the Caledonian Society, will be invited to co-operate by way of a friendly Ingleside.
