PENALTY FOR VIOLENCE

The Maori Avho ran amok in a /ocal billiards saloon on Saturday, Harry Ratana Nuku, aged 21 years, nf Ruatoki, faced four charges at the local Court on Monday before Messrs, G. A . Brabant and J. G. Mulholland, Js'.P.

Sergeant Farrell stated that the -accused had become extremely violent Avithout provocation and in a short time had caused considerable damage, breaking tAvo billiards cues, two panes of glass in a AvindoAV, and throAvn a billiards ball through a svallboard, the damage being estimated at £4 10s.

When Constable G. H. Thomassen had arrested him lie had violently resisted and had struck the taxi driver inflicting a cut over the eye. The man had continued to resist until placed in the cells. Mr Farrell added that the accused had admitted having many whiskeys and had not been in trouble previously.

Hicks, assaulting George K. Kelly p.nd resisting arrest being sentenced to one month's gaol the terms to be

concurrent.
