FOURTEEN DAYS
MAORI SENT TO GAOL
FRICTION ON FARM
A charge of committing mischief resulted in Riri Mathews or William Miatliews, a native aged 22 years, being sentenced to 14 days in the local goal byi Messrs G. A. Brabant and G. K. Kent, X's.P., at the local Court yesterday. The Bench told the prisoner that on the expiry of his sentence he must leave the district and that he must pay £1 for damage done. Mathews, stated Sergeant M. Farrell, had been in partnership in a sliaremilking contract with a European named Gilbert. He had caused
a great deal of domestic friction and on several occasions Gilbert had complained to the Police. Finally the trouble grew to such an extent that Gilbert ordered Mathews; off the farm and the latter being resentful broke two windows in the house which belonged to the farm owner, Mr Bryan Palmes.
Mi" Farrell added that fciie accused was a "bird of passage" belonging to the Far North, and Mr and Mrs Gilbert wished to be sure that they would suffer no more annoyance from him.
