WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

MATATA MEETING

The monthly meeting of the Matata Women's Institute was held on Wednesday, September 24. Mrs Magee presided over a very good attendance. The final arrangements were made for the flower show which, is to be held in the Presbyterian Hall on October 4 and a .very successful day is anticipated. The roll call "Gardening in September" did not bring forth very much gardening knowledge. Competitions: Best flower, Miss Burt 1, Mrs Magee 2, Mrs Ansell 3. Sponge sandwich, Mrs Ansell 1, Mrs ft.. Withy 2, Mrs M!agee 3. Shoulder spray, Mrs H. Withy 1. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses Mrs Creek and Miss Burt.

OTAKIRI MEETING The October meeting of the Otakiri Women's Institute was held in the Otakiri Hall on October 1. Mrs Tickner presided over 17 members. The president gave a very interesting report of the bi-annual council meeting held at Waimana on September 25. Golden Thread: Mrs Tickner read from "Pioneer Tales" the chapter dealing with' early Wellington. The socks made by Mrs Rickard added £1 13s 6d for soldiers' parcels. Mrs Rickard was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Competition results: Bowl of flowers for effect, Mrs Tickner 1 and 2, Mrs Miulhern 3. Prettiest apron from 1 yard, Mrs Tickner 1, Mrs, Cristall 2, Miss Tunnicliffe 3. Best flower, Mrs Higram 1, Mrs Winters 2, Mrs Tickner 3. The sale of "Mystery Parcels" added to the amusement of the afternoon as did the speeches from members on subjects drawn from a hat.

Afternoon tea served by 1 Mrs Cobden and Mrs Woodberry brought the meeting to a close.
