SUDDEN DEATH
ELDERLY MAN COLLAPSES IN
STREET
RESULT OF HEART FAILURE
At about 10.30 on Monday morning an elderly resident of Whakatane, Mr Finlay (Frank) Nicholson, collapsed and died in the Strand. Mr Nicholson, who is a well known resident of Landing Road 1 , was about to mount his bicycle at the curb in front of the Regenlt Theatre when be fell.
Passers-by quickly picked him up and carried him into the Regent Theatre. Dr A. W. Fletcher Cole, who happened to be handy, made an examination and found that the deceased had passed away, death probably occurring immediately. A certificate of death from heart failure has been furnished by Dr F. -I. Appleby.
The late Mr Nicholson who was aged sixty-nine years, and who has been a resident of Whakatane for the past seven years, during that time gaining popularity as a result of his kindly and generous nature. Born in Australia lie came to New Zealand 38 years ago and a brother and a sister .who survive him live in that country. Mr Nicholson served in the Great War and on his return took up farming at Athenrec, near Waihi. In 1935 he came to Whakatane where for some time he was caretaker of the local Bowling Club in latter years giving up those duties, but remaining an enthusiastic player. He was a keen member of the R.S.A. and the O'range Lodge. He leaves a wide circle of friends.
