FAREWELL DINNER

MiR AND MRS L. R. BROWN ENTERTAINED

About fifty members of the staff of the Native Lands Department joined at dinner at the Whakatane Hotel on Monday night to bid farewell to Mr and Mrs L. R. Brown, who leave to reside at Hastings on Saturday week. Visitors were present from Rjotorua, Tauranga, Ruatoki,t Haparapara Station and Te Teko, while representatives of the Department of Agriculture and the Public Works Department were also in attendance. Mr G. R. West acted as host, while Mrs J. R. Waddell, as hostess, presented Mrs Brown with a prettily arranged posy as she entered the lounge. The Rev. Wharetini Rangi led grace. Following the honouring of tha* Loyal toast, the toast master, Mr K. G. Runciman welconjed the visitors and called on the following speak-. J ers: Mr T. M. Wilkinson (Whakatane staff), Mr G. V. Fordham (Registrar, Rotorua), Mr John Dicken' (Tauranga), Mr J. Merritt (RHatoki) Mr J. N. Breingan (Haparapara), Mr L. Brasnahan (Ngatiawa), and Mr E. Meredith (Valuation Department) . Many glowing tributes were paid to Mr and Mrs Brown, and Mr West made presentations of a wristlet watch and a silver sandwich tray on behalf of the Departmental! staff of the district. Miss Maureen Brow a was handed a book. During the evening a welcome was extended to Mr J. H. Flowers, who succeeds Mr Brown at and who arrived from Hastings; to commence his duties this week. Local Staff Gathering On Tuesday morning at, the office of the Native Lands Department Messrs L. H. Brown and O. M. Nicholls were entertained at morning tea. Mr Nicholls leaves the> local staff of the Public Works Department after three years in Whakatane to take charge of the aerodrome construction at Tauranga. On behalf of the staff i» the Commercial Buildings each guest was presented with a leather letter folio.
