INDUSTRIAL SUBURB!

PUPUARUHE OR PIRIPAI

With the establishment of the new Cheese Factory wit him the precincts of the Paper Mills, and by borrowing a little of the reflected gilory of the defunct Freezing Works, and the Flax Mill, there appears to be some excuse for the growing liabit of some persons to refer to the vicinity as the town's 'industrial suburb/ The question which is! asked however, is whether the new district can be legitimately referred to as Pupuaruhe (a name borrowed from the Maori Store) adjacent) or whether it is in reality Piripai—a more popular and, we understand a more hoary title than that which signifies 'a bundle of fern-root.' Reference of our perplexity to a local Maori authority has elicited l the information that the two place names represent entirely a,rate districts, though they adjoin each' other. Piripai lies east of Pupuaruhe and includes the Maori Pa of that name. Pupuaruhe is the correct name for the district round and about- the Paper Mills l . It therefore: becomes evident that if people desire to name'the new 'industrial suburb' they will in justice to a name dignified, by long standing,, have to twist their tongues airound a tricky Maori title or sliide through it by calling it poo-poo-ali-rue.
