BIGGER RETURNS

INCREASE IN BOBBY CALVES WHAKATANE DISTRICT TALLY To date approximately, 1000 more bobby calves have been railed from the district than for the same peir lod last year according to Mr S. \V. Birstall, the local agent. Last year at the end of August the total, was 9800 while this year so far the number railed has reached 10,750. The total for the whole season fn 1940 was 18,800' and it is expected that this number will have been improved upon when the current season concludes. Mr Birstall is cf the opinion that the increase is not, as might be thought, the result of farmers not retaining so many calves for herd replacements, but that more calves were born. He says that it appears by his figures that just as many heifer calves are being kept as a very small percentage have been through the Pool.
