Damaged Plane. The Tui which crashed at Ohope last Saturday was conveyed by motor lorry lo Rotorua this weekMagistrate's Court. The monthly sitting of the WhaKatane Magistrate's Court is scheduled lor Tuesday next. Fa!se Fire Alarm. At about 10.15 yesterday morning the fire alarm sounded, but proved to be a false call, it being suggested that the wiring system had short circuited. Dredge at Work. The Lands Department's Ruston Bucyrus dredge, which, has been used to excavate a new outlet for the .Rangitaiki River near Thornton. has been brought back to tne Orini creek on the Thornton-Wha-katane Road to continue its worn there. Mother's Aim Defeated. Many a Whakatane. man with children at school might have blushed at this one. But it actua'lr !y happened at Invercftrgill: "Please miss, dad had two bottles of beer, but mummy would not let me bring the bottles in case you thought he drank," said a little girl, when teacher asked her if she had brought any bottles for the drive she was instituting. ~ Businessmen's Affairs. The Chamber of Commerce is to hold a general meeting on September 11 when a full agenda is to be dealt with including such matters as arrangements for the New Year's Eve Carnival, Museum for Whakatane, Black-out Regulations, and the Chamber',: motto "Work, Service and Progress." The supervisor of the Post Office is to address the meeting on National Savings, while by-laws of the Chamber arc to be discussed. Special Entertainment. A new form of entertainment for the purpose cf raising funds for the Red Cross is at present being organised and this will take the form of a special picture benefit. No! only will first class screen fare be offered but during the evening novelty burlesque auctions Avill be held. Those responsible intend sparing no effort in the preparations and the vestibule of the theatre is to specially decorated for the occasion. Tickets for the film are to be sold in the Strand on Friday. Help For Lepers. Six hundred and seventy-five lepers—men, women and children— are on Makogai island- Many are stricken on their death-beds suffering intense physical pain, coupled with much mental and moral suffering. So racked with pain arc patients that on occasions the brain snaps and they become insane. Whakatane residents are asked to communicate with Mr P. J.. TVomey of Ghristchurch, who will advise them as to the best methods of helping these unfortunates.
