NEW FIRE STATION

FUTURE NEEDS CONSIDERED

BOROUGH COUNCIL APPROACHED

The Wliaka,tane Fire Board

reviewing future needs recently discussed a proposal to build a new station. A;t ithe meeting of the Borough Council on Monday when an enquiry was made regarding a site, Cr S. S. Shapl- - who is chairman of the Fire Board, statedi that although the intention is not to build l immediately alll information is being obtained.

The letter asked the Council to place a price on its section adjacent Ghristensen's furniture shop, the section mentioned not being the one on the corner.. It was mentioned

that the Government valuation wa; £175, Cr A. J. Canning commenting that at such a figure the section would be a bargain.

Commenting on the letter Cr W. Sullivan was of the opinion that

the site mentioned could be improved on and suggested the old quarry site as a more suitable place to build.

Cr Shapley stated that the Board always considered the business area as the most vital and pointed out

that from the quarry site the engine would have to pull across the road to proceed to the town.

Cr Sullivan: It wouldn't take long o cross the road.

Cr Shapley welcomed any suggestions from councillors and remarked that it was not necessarily the intention of the Board to build immediately or necessarily in the near future. "The Board always looks ahead being a progressive body."

Cr Sullivan: Ahem! who is the

chairman of the Board ?

In reply to C,r C. S. Armstrong Cr Shaplev stated that the present site was not large enough and was

not considered suitable. The present station was the property of the Borough Council.

His Worship: I do not think the council. would be wise to part with any of its property handy to the present Chambers as the time wili arrive when we will have to rebuild . The matter was referred to Finance Committee.
