MILITARY GYMKHANA
NEXT SATURDAY'S EVENT HOME GUARD EFFORT Next Saturday will be a big day in Whakatane's year and it is anticipated that the A. and P. Show Grounds will accommodate a very large, crowd to witness the military gymkhana organised by the Whakatane Home Guard. The Mounted unit was chiefly responsible for the organisation of this event which will be one novel in the district, and ha.n found ready support from the foot units) of the Guard. A programme which will appeal to all, both entrants and spectators has been arranged. The programme has been finalised as follows. All entries close at the secretary's office ten minutes before the events commence: — 1. Half Section Jumping. (Ist prize 2 miniature Cups and £1, 2nd 'priz* 10s). Over three hurdles. 2. Tilt in Ring. (Ist £1, 2nd 10s). Five rings. Number of ringst and time. 3. Boys' Jump. Prizes, Ist Silver Cup and 10s, 2nd Silver Cup and ss. 4. Platoon Event. (Ist Cup and £4. 2nd £2. Drilling, marching etc. without rifles. 6. Flag Race with led horse. Ist prize £1, 2nd 10s. 7. Section Drill with Rifles. Ist prize Silver Cup and £2, 2nd £1. 9. Lloyd Lindsay. Ist prize Cup and £1, and Cup and 10s. Rider with led horse over two hurdles.. Second man mounts: led horse and both return to starting point. 11. Foot Race. Ist prize £1, 2nd 10s. 12. Best Troop Horse. Ist prize Easy Chair. 13. Section Jump. Four men. Ist prize 4 Cups and £4, 2nd prize £2. Over three hurdles. 14. Tug of War. Ist prize 50 per cent of entrance fees. 15. Open Jump. Ist prize Cup and £3, 2nd £2. Over four jumps, including one Avire. 18. Victoria Cross. Ist prize Cup and £1, 2nd Cup and 10s. Go out over two hurdles. Pick up dummy and return with dummy over one hurdle. Rider must dismount to pick up dummy. 19. Tug of War. Mounted four aside. Ist prize £1. 20. Wrestling on Horseback, four men. No boots or spurs to be worn. Ist prize £1. 21. Best Drilled Section, Mounted. Section of eight men. Ist prize Cup and £2, 2nd £1. All orders to be given by signal. Mount and dismount as in troop drill. Owing to the number of horses that will be assembled near the only possible target area, the clay bird shoot will not be held.
