WOMEN'S INSTITUTES
WHAKATANE MEETING The July meeting of the Institute wasi well attended. After the reading of ihe minutes, the secretary gave members particulars of results of the Winter Show activities. The sum of £10 was made on the Institutci stall, and the Institute took first prize for the Court display and for the Float in the procession. For the Blind Institute £65 was, made. It was decided to donate £4 4s to the National War Fund. The Sewing Circle under the leadership of Mrs Moran, reported 500 garments ready for immediate despatch overseas. The Knitting Circle reported that knitting for Air Force relations had been brought to a stop temporarily owing to lack of wool. Mrs Norman reported that 5 parcels had gone forward to soldiers overseas, during the month. A letter was. received from the Federation suggesting that it might be possible to hold a Drama Festival this year, and it wasi decided to support this suggestion. Whaka* tan© Institute also supported the Idea of holding the annual conference in Wellington. Mrs Stewart agreed to hold an Arts and Crafts Class in the Methodist Hall as after as practicable, the first to start on Tuesday *Bth inst. A collection of garments for use at the local annexe wasi made during the. afternoon. Talk and' Demonstration. Mrs F. Prideaux gave a most valuable and instructive, lecture on several aspects of Home Nursing, iind a demonstration on the right way to bandage. This was enthusiastically received by all members. Entertainment consisted of several items by the popular Glee Club, and afternoon tea was served by the hositesses for the afternoon. Results of competitions were: — Bed jacket: Mrs Wheeler 1, Mrs Larsen 2; artificial Mrs Ly~ saght 1, Mrs Stqwart 2: best flower: Mrs Mclsaas 1; basket: Mrs W. Bridger 1.
MATATA MEETING
The Juno meeting of the Matatq Institute was held on Wednesday, June 25 at 2 p.m. Mrs Ma,gee presided over a good attendance. An exhibition of articles from abroad brought forth many treasures and proved a delightful half hour for all members. Mrs Caverhill gave a very interesting reading on birds 1 of the dis> trict. Mrs McCraclcen, who is leaving the district, was presented with a small gift. Mrs Magee in making the presentation, wished Mrs McCracken success and happiness in her new home. Competitions — Shortberad: Mrs Magee 1, Mrs Withy 2; piemelon jam: Mrs Smith 1, Mrsi Magee 2; best flower: Mrs Smith 1, Mrs Withy 2. Afternoon tea was; served by Mrs Caverhill and Mrs lVlarr.
