Farmers and Excess Profits. "It is not the intention to bring farmers within the provisions of the excessi profits legislation," stated the Minister of Agriculture, the Hon. J. G. Barclay, in reply to a question at the National Dairy Conference at Auckland. A delegate said it would be unfair if a farmer had to pay this taxation if his income were the result of his war effort in expanding production. The Minister said it had not been possible to write the intention he mentioned into the bill, but he would arrange for any cases of hardship to »be submitted to the Commissioner of Taxes;. Good Advice. A rather intriguing incident occurred during a sitting of the Manpow e'r Committee in Te Awamutu. An appellant, an elderly gentleman, had entered the box, and, after being duly sworn, was handed a type:! document by his counsel. The learn-, ed friend immediately asked: "You have read and signed the document?" "Well," unexpectedly replied the appellant, "I signed it but didn't read it." It was thereupon agreed that the appellant should rend the document there and then. This he did, and in doing so pointed out two minor errors. Thereupon the chairman of Ihe committee (Mr S. C. B. Macky) remarked that the incident showed the necessity of rending all legal documents before signing them. "Yes, I must keep that in miml in future," replied appellant.
