FAILURE TO ENROL
MAGISTRATE IMPOSES FINE GAOL FOR DELIBERATE AVOIDANCE Agreeing that there was some 1 measure for excuse in the exceptional case brought before him yesterday at the local court, Mr! E. L. Walton, S.M., imposfed a fine on a local man who failed ta enrol but at the same time issued a warning note when he said that in cases of wilful avoidance of obligation in this respect, gaol was the place for offenders. It was stated that the offender Richard George Walden, was aged 39 years and was single, although he had been living as a married man for fifteen years. He had been under the impression that on returning o questionnaire last year in connection with social security that he had fulfilled his obligation, and was enrolled. His counsel, Mr G. Otley, stated that prior to proceedings having ■besen taken! Walden had had further communication from the Department and had effected enrolment. He was fined £5 with costs 16s.
