PLANS FOR YEAR ALLOCATIONS TO BE LOWERED Last year in the, Whakatane County £3453 was spent on. the eradication of ragwort, the estimate of expenditure in this direction made at the commencement of the year being £3440. This year the council estimates the sum to be used for the purpose at £3000. The lowering of the estimate re suits from a letter received from the Minister of Agriculture, who states that it is fully anticipated that arrangements will be approved for operations to be carried on aftei the winter months on somewhat thn same lines as last year, although possibly on a reduced scale. Every endeavour, he stated, is' being madi to make supplies of Atlacide available, Avhile in the meantime supplies! on hand will have to b" conserved for use when the greatest amount of new growth is evident. The Minister continued that it would also be necessary to go into the question of obtaining crcdits by way of refunds from farmers or whose properties work is carried out That the schemc had been in opera tion for five years w T as pointed out by the Minister, Avho added that il seemed reasonable to anticipate thai a considerable reduction in the amount required by >vay of Government assistance should now be possible.
