MEAGRE RAINFALL
A record for lack of rainfall for the month of May is reported by the observer. Mir H. Muscutt, only 1.21 inches falling and this being spread over ten days. In May of last year 5.07 inches were recorded, while the next driest May on record Avas in 1936 when the fall was 1.33. The month produced its maximum fall in 1928 «vhen the measure was 12.39. N So far this year in. Whakatane the rainfall has reached 18.31 in comparison with 17.4H inches for the same five months of 1940. The driest lirst five months of the year were in 1939, when only 6.89 inches fell, while the heaviest fall for the term was in 1924 when 36.74 inches were recorded. Edgecumbe Figures The Edgecumbe observer (Mr Alex McLean) also reports a record for the dry month the fall on eight days amounting to only 1.09 inches in comparison with 6.06 inches recorded in May of 1940. The total for the year to date is 22.57 inches against 25.46 last year.
