LABOUR LEGISLATION

RESOLUTION REGARDING FORTY HOUR WEEK SUPPORT OF LOCAL COUNCIL • A letter from the Lake County Council regarding the 40-hour week was supported by the Whakatane County Council at its meeting on Tuesday. The letter forwarded; the following resolution : "As a result of experience during recent months, both from the financial and manpower aspects, the Lake County Council

rs convinced that the effect of existing legislation relative to labour, is so retarding production and business activities, that the AA r ar effort is being definitely- and seriously retarded, therefore, that in order to permit this Dominion to throw its whole Aveight into the present conflict in an unrestricted manner, the Council considers the Government should at once be pressed to bring about the immediate cessation of the forty-hour Aveek together AA r ith its many hampering regulations. The Council further contends that the temporary Avaiving of ideals, rights and privileges of both employes- and employee is in the present circumstances fully justified, and if the people of NeAv Zealand are to be permitted to co-operate to the full, as is being done in England, and give their unlimited backing to our Fighting Forces Avho are making tremendous) sacrifices on their behalf, all such obstacles should at once be removed." The purpose of the resolution Is self explanatory, and it is felt that the Council will have no hesitation in supporting the views expressed, but to be effective it is suggested that the matter, of necessity, should be treated as urgent. The Council's support of the resolution be expressed by advising the Hon. Minister of Labour, and the member of the district to the effect. If the Council Avould further circulate this resolution Avithin its -irea, the .action would be groat]y appreciated. Received by Borough. The same communication Avas tabled at Monday's meeting of the 80-rough Council and received, it being feH that no result Avould be obtained by pursuing the matter, although members expressed sympathy with the suggestion.
