CITIZENS' BAND
APPEAL FOR BOROUGH DONATION • CONSIDERABLE DISCUSSION RESULTS Ap application was received by * the Borough Council this week from the Citizens Band for a. grant of £52. lor the current year. A balance sheet was tabled which showed a credit balarice of £43 18s 2d, which His Worship the Mayor regarded as very healthy. Cr S. S. Shapley opposed the /granting of £52, stating that the Council could not pay l out such a sum if it did not get same service from the band. The band had ceas- - eycl to function and now the Boys' Band had taken its place under the same organisation.
Support for the band to the extent asked was voiced by Cr G. "S. Armstrong. He explained that the Boys' Band had at present 30 members and the boys were in many •cases supplying their own instruments, These lads would be the 'bandsmen of the future and deserved encouragement. He moved thai the grant be made and his motion : was seconded by Cor J. G. Mulhollandj
Agreeing with Cr Shapley, Gr W Sullivan pointed out. that the band was not hard up and the money could well be used by the Works Committee. He added that the council had given help, and had done so that the money might be spent in giving the iown service. However, the money had evidently not been spent and if it was not being made of then thei council should not give more. Cr Sullivan continued that the balance sheet did not show that any money had been raised by the effort of the members of the band, and he claimed that there should have been some effort made by the personnel to help thegnselves. "Here, on the other hand, Ave give a grant of £5 to the Plunket Society. Have you ever heard of such 'twaddle*"— if I were a woman I' wouldn't take it. That institution is doing a great work and yet has to cadge to transport the nurse from place to place. If any organisation deserves - £50 that is it, 1 " Cr Shapley moved an amelndment that the band be granted £20. Hig, motion was seconded by Cr C-reeke, agreed that some service was required from the band. He suggested that the council pay on results and that the grant be held up until the end of the year to see if the' results were obtained. The amendment was carried.
