PATRIOTIC AFFAIRS

Sir,.—l shall be obliged if you 2; ; will l allow me space to correct a wrong impression which may hava been created by the recent announce ment in regard to district funds. Seeing that I am chairman of the Edgecumbe Branch and that, I was also chairman of the Combined! r Committee which . was! responsible for the running of the- Patriotic v Gala Day at Edgecumbei I' should be ■ sorry indeed if our local Edgecumbe group were to receive credit ia the eyes of the public for what was: a real splendid joint effort on the ; part of the five Patriotic Committee® of the Rangitaiki namely Thorn-ton, Edgecumbe, Awakeri, Ota-, kiri and T'e' Teko. It was a very great pleasure to me to be associated with a committee whose work displayed,, the mostwhole hearted 7.eal and the compie test harmony. I take this oppor-. tunity to thank the public gainera!-_r-ly for that support which made our £ function the success that it was. i . The sum of £26'0 5s 7d, the net ' ceeds, was credited! to the various >. arejas in the ratio* of their respective -V" assessments under the Inter-Zone v Committee. Under this arrangement •/ the Edge cum bj Committee receives the larger- share of thesei proceeds to which its: assessment' ehtitlies it ; but I must confessi, when I considerthe Trojan efforts of the other conkmittees audi their representatives, > that I have my own private doubts as to the fairness to them of this arrangement. If any special tlhainks bev due ta Edgecumbe there will be general agreement, regarding the fact that from Edgecumbe' was obtained a secretary in Mr F. Patience!, who could not have been battered.. It was his capable and painstaking work more than any other single factor that brought us success. Yours etc.. LAN B. GOW.
