SCHOOL SPORTS
MATCHES AT TAURANGA On Friday last a boys cricket team and girls tennis team accompanied by Mr G. C. Scuthey and three other members of the staff of the local school journeyed to Tauranga and on the cricket field a very exciting match was played for the Baker Cup, the Whakatane boys being victorious. In the first innings Whakatane scored "87, McGready being top scorer with 35 and Re id (19) and Anderson (11) being other main contributors. In the second innings Anderson (not out 29) and aVTicCready (not out 16) batted well in the score of 62 runs for one wicket. Tauranga replied in the first knock with 68, Ronayne (19) and Barraclough (11) being double figure scorers. Gilbert was the only one to score (18) in the second innings. Bowling for Whakatane in the first innings Rivett took seven wickets and a similar number in the second. Tennis The tennis matches resulted in Whakatane's favour also by seven sets to four.
Tauranga proved themselves to be very hospitable, providing the pupils with dinner, morning and afternoon tea. During dinner speeches were given by the representatives of the schools, and after the conclusion of the games the players returned home by train. The Baker Cup was donated some years ago by Mr E. T. Baker, of Tauranga, for competition among Secondary Schools of the Bay of Plenty.
